Our mission

In September, 2008, the Town of Carrboro contracted with Greenways, Inc, a renowned environmental consulting firm, to create a Conceptual Plan for a Bolin Creek Greenway between Estes Drive and Homestead Road. The goals of the Greenway are:

1) Protect and improve water quality along Bolin and Jones Creek
2) Protect, conserve, and preserve wildlife habitat
3) Connect surrounding land use in Carrboro by providing a non-motorized mode of transportation
4) Provide safe access to Bolin and Jones Creek
5) Enhance quality of life by providing a recreational facility for all citizens of Carrboro to enjoy

The Town of Carrboro is considering the recommended  proposal to construct a paved greenway within the OWASA easement along Bolin Creek between Estes Drive and Homestead Road.  The GWI Proposal can be viewed at www.greenways.com/bolin.html.

The current dirt roadway is badly degraded from decades of abuse by OWASA vehicles, hikers, bikers and joggers.  The road becomes an impassable quagmire after heavy rains and contributes significant sediment to the creek.  The proposed 10-foot concrete greenway will stabilize the impaired roadway, reduce sedimentation, encourage pedestrian and bicycle commuting to school and work, and provide a valuable, healthy recreational amenity that is accessible to everyone in the community.

We believe that the proposed plan will best meet the goals of the Greenway and will provide the following benefits to all citizens of Carrboro and surrounding areas, including:

(1)     Environmental preservation:  a paved greenway will reduce creek sedimentation by stabilizing the badly eroded OWASA easement along the creek and minimize destruction of woodlands as  most of the easement is already cleared to 30 feet;
(2)    Safety:  the greenway along Bolin Creek will provide a safe, off-road link to walk or ride bicycles to school and work;
(3)    Recreation: the greenway will encourage healthy, outdoor recreation;
(4)    Access:  a  paved greenway will provide year-round access for everyone in the community including people with disabilities, elderly and children;
(5)    Community connector: the greenway will connect 35 neighborhoods, 7 parks and 7 schools in two communities
(6)    Transit corridor: will provide an attractive cross-town transit corridor encouraging bicycle commuting to campus, schools, work and shopping areas;
(7)    Environmental education: the greenway will provide a natural laboratory for children and adults to learn about nature;
(8)    Scenic adventure: the creekside route is one of the most scenic areas in Carrboro.
